Miniature out of a liturgical manuscript
© GASK – Galerie der Region Mittelböhmen, Kuttenberg
Kutna Hora/Kutenberg was not only the kingdom’s second largest city, it also housed the royal treasury. Silver mining was the source of royal wealth. This miniature from a liturgical manuscript shows how silver was mined at Kutna Hora - from mining the precious metal to purifying and manufacturing silver to striking coinage. One depiction shows the silver stock market and the buyers who participated in it. This depiction renders not only the different steps in the process of silver production, it also provides insights into Kuttenberg society, from rich merchants to poor miners.
