The Death of Isabella of Castile

On November 26, 1504, Queen Isabella died at Medina del Campo. On November 23, 1504 she had stipulated in her will that after her death the Kingdom of Castile would first be inherited by her daughter, Johanna, and then by her Habsburg grandson, Charles.

After Isabella died, a power struggle ensued between Ferdinand I of Aragon, who acted as regent for his daughter Johanna, and Johanna’s Habsburg husband, Philip the Handsome. In the spring of 1506, Philip travelled with his wife from the Netherlands to Castile. On June 27, 1506 King Ferdinand was forced to retreat from the Kingdom of Castile .
